Bottom Line

The Alienware Alpha ASM100-1580 is a console desktop hybrid that is designed around the Steam Big Picture platform. While it is smaller and more powerful than the PS4 and the Xbox One it is less future proof than these consoles with their dedicated games.

The Alienware Alpha ASM100-1580 is a console desktop hybrid that has been praised for its ease of use, its compact size and for its Xbox 360 controller. But it is slightly limited as it is built around the Steam Big Picture platform and this makes it harder to play games purchased elsewhere. The system also runs a custom version of Windows 8.1 with a custom UI that can be slow at times. The hardware will run current and older games fine, but it is slightly underpowered for future titles and long-term use. While it was designed to be a console killer, this hybrid PC has a long way to go to snatch that title.

Born of the limbo of Steam Machine prototypes, Dell's Alienware Alpha is one of the most intriguing new computer releases of the year. This is despite the fact that we've had a very long time to get used to the idea of a gaming desktop that looks and feels like a living room game console. We first saw an early version of this hardware near the end of 2013, back when it was to be the first major brand name behind Valve's Steam Machine platform.
